Does Domain Age Play a Role in SEO?

SEO, or search engine optimization, is something that all webmasters need to know about. If they want anyone to ever find their site, they need to start practicing it. There are several elements that go into SEO, and a successful, well-rounded SEO campaign designed to give results will incorporate all of them. It seems, however, that not all of SEO is about what you do; there are elements of SEO that a webmaster doesn’t have terribly much control over, like domain age.

Domain age does make a difference.

One of the many things that go into the way Goolge determines where pages shake out in search results is domain age. This means that the longer a domain has been registered, the better it would fair, theoretically, over a totally identical site that is younger. There are so many other things that determine this algorithm, however, it is hard to say that age alone would end up adding that much weight. Some elements like which keywords are utilized and the quantity and quality of backlinks are likely to mean that much more. Please note, that there are many skeptics out there. These folks continue to claim that domain age makes no difference in SEO. Believe what you will, but Google did state back in 2005 that they were going to start taking this into account, and they must have surely implemented it by now.

You can work around it when you renew.

As mentioned, this is just one thing that helps to determine search result rankings. If you are worried about how it will impact your site or your future sites, there are things you can do to age your page. Google doesn’t just look at age, but it looks at registration and renewal dates and durations. This means that it has an eye on whether or not your site is registered for five months or five years. The whole point of looking at domain age is to root out spammers and scammers, and these folks usually register their domain for short time periods. If you register your domain for a time farther into the future, it shows Google that your site is going to be legitimate and real, and this will give you the same boost that age would.

Buy an existing site to get more benefits.

Additionally, you could buy an existing domain. You could pick up a parked domain or one that never got off the ground. This will give you a clean slate on a site that has been registered for some time now. A better alternative would be to scoop up a site that has been active. If you do this, you will get the benefit of the previous webmaster’s SEO efforts such as existing backlinks. This may not work too well if you have an existing site. However, with creativity and some redirects, you could still use this existing site and is search ranking to your benefit for your young web page’s SEO efforts.
